Headfirst down the dunes and hurrah to see Dolphins

We met at 8.30 am at Circular Quay. After making sure everyone is in who should have been and meeting the driver and our guide for the day Brett, it was time to get moving.

Brett told us what’s the program of the day and pointed to us along the way any sights of interest in the surrounding landscape. He also put on some relaxing music and so before the first refreshing stop most of us were sleeping.

First we stoped at place called Anna Bay where we climbed on top of sand dunes, which are along the whole coast called Stockton Beach in the length of 35 km. It was after the rain so the sand was easier to walk on. When we reached the top Brett found the toughest slope and took out two plastic sheets. First we could not believe he means it so steep was the sand. So he had to prove to us that it’s possible to slide it without an accident. He sat onto the plastic sheet, someone pushed him down the hill and there he went! So it is possible, now it didn’t look so horrifying any more but rather tempting. Well, not everyone took the chance to slide the dune, but there was one hero who even dared to slide the dune headfirst! With level of adrenalin quite high and later with eyes full of sand he took the challenge and did not regret it. None else tried to beat that, so when we all had enough of sliding we went to take some group pictures with the darkening sky. And with the first raindrops we sharply strode back to the bus.

We drove a little further to the coast of Stockton Beach. Even it rained there was quite a lot of swimmers enjoying the sea. After short refreshing break we carried on to Nelson Bay. We still had more than half an hour before we were to board the Dolphin boat and we spend it mainly hiding our heads under the nearest cover and having some bite to eat. Luckily, shortly before we were to board the boat it actually stopped raining and the sun popped out and then shone all the way.

On the boat each of us found the best spot for watching the Dolphins and with excitement awaited where (or if at all) we will see them. We went a bit further from the beach and headed closer to some other boats when the captain warned us that he spotted them ahead of the boat and that we were going to see them in a minute. Suddenly we saw them too and everyone started to shout to warn the others. It was time to start filming videos and make pictures. Dolphins were swimming very close to the boat so we could examine them very well. After everyone had seen enough of these beautiful animals our boat sailed close to one of the beaches. There we stayed for a while and anyone had a chance to try jumping off the boat or slides down the waterslide. Those who didn’t feel the need to get wet appreciated free tea or coffee on the boat. We came back to Nelson Bay just before 4pm and after short refreshment we returned back to the bus.

One more important stop waited ahead of us on the way home and that was Gan Gan Lookout. On the footpath we came to the open lookout with a beautiful view all around and bellow us. Such a magnificent view deserved a few photographs. Brett told us some interesting stories and showed us places, where they often organize camping trips with Australian themes.

On the way back we had a good laugh when exchanging some sweets and biscuits with Durian taste. In the words of one participant: The trip was nice except the biscuits!

Next organised trip for WSIA students and their friends is going to be on Sunday 29 February and it is going to be canoeing in the Royal National Park. Don’t miss it; sure it will be a lot of fun again!
